Children’s author and philosopher Neera K. Badhwar introduces young readers to an uplifting lesson in self-confidence, resilience, and the power of humor with her new book, Kali the Elephant Learns from Socrates the Philosopher.

In this heartwarming story, Kali the Elephant struggles with feelings of insecurity after her elementary-school friends tease her about her large ears, long trunk, and unusually large eyes. Determined to fit in, Kali tries everything she can think of to change her appearance, only to discover that true confidence comes not from changing who she is but from embracing her unique qualities.

When Kali learns about the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, who was also mocked for his appearance, she discovers a surprising way to respond to teasing. Inspired by his wisdom and good humor, Kali finds the perfect words to answer her classmates, transforming an uncomfortable situation into one filled with laughter, understanding, and newfound respect.

Through Kali’s journey, Badhwar delivers a powerful message for children facing similar challenges. Rather than responding with anger or resentment, readers are encouraged to build resilience, recognize their strengths, and use humor as a tool to navigate difficult social situations.

“Many children are teased by their classmates, including my own granddaughter when she was in middle school,” says Badhwar. “I wanted to show that a child can stand up for herself without becoming angry or vengeful. When I remembered that Socrates himself was teased and responded with humor and confidence, I knew his story could offer an inspiring example for young readers.”

As a philosopher and educator, Badhwar also saw an opportunity to introduce children to one of history’s most influential thinkers in a fun and engaging way. By blending timeless wisdom with an entertaining story, she helps young readers learn valuable life lessons while developing confidence in themselves.

Neera K. Badhwar earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto and taught philosophy at the University of Oklahoma for twenty-two years. Although she first experimented with writing children’s stories when her son was young, she began pursuing children’s literature more seriously in recent years. In addition to her children’s writing, Badhwar is the author of the philosophical works Well-Being: Happiness in a Worthwhile Life and Friendship: A Philosophical Reader. She currently has several additional children’s books awaiting publication.

Kali the Elephant Learns from Socrates the Philosopher is a delightful and empowering read for children, parents, educators, and anyone seeking a positive approach to self-esteem, friendship, and personal growth. The book reminds readers that their differences can become their greatest strengths when they learn to see themselves through a lens of confidence and self-acceptance.
